BASKETBALL: Reagan County boys dominate Coahoma to take 5-3A lead

Reagan County High School dominated Coahoma 61-24 Tuesday in Big Lake to stay undefeated in District 5-3A boys basketball.

Jarrett Brown scored 26 points to lead the Owls, who improved to 15-11 overall and 3-0 in district play and separated from the Bulldogs, who entered the game with an identical district mark.

The Owls led 25-9 at halftime after holding Coahoma to just two points in the second quarter.

A.J. Avalos added 12 points for Reagan County.

Raheem Ashford and Devon Bennett each scored five points for the Bulldogs.

The Owls host Sonora on Friday.

Frenship 49, San Angelo Central boys 39

The San Angelo Central Bobcats fell to the first-place Tigers in a District 2-6A contest at Babe Didrikson gym.

Frenship improved to 23-2 overall and 5-0 in district. Central dropped to 17-7 and 3-2.

Chace Fields and Jaedyn Gipson scored 12 points apiece in the loss.

The Bobcats travel to Odessa High on Friday.

Frenship 40, San Angelo Central girls 36

The San Angelo Central Lady Cats put up a strong fight at home against the first-place Lady Tigers in a District 2-6A game at Babe Didrikson gym.

Frenship improved to 21-5 overall and 6-0 in district. Central dropped to 18-11 and 4-3.

Jewels Perez (13) and Deandra Allen (10) led Central in scoring.

Central travels to Odessa High on Friday.

Ozona girls 44, Wink 36

Ozona overcame a five-point halftime deficit to beat Wink in a District 7-2A game at home.

The Lady Lions outscored Wink 29-16 in the second half behind a more-inspired defensive effort, head coach Chad Myers said.

“We came out more focused in the second half,” Myers said. “We got a few turnovers being aggressive and it helped get the momentum back.”

Jaylynn Tijerina led the Lady Lions with 11 points. She had two 3-point goals and hit 3-of-4 free throws. Kelyn Gass had 10 points, which included 4-of-6 from the charity stripe.

Ozona (13-13, 3-1) travels to Christoval on Friday.

Garden City boys 37, Grady 35

Mason Walker scored the go-ahead basket with three seconds to play to lift Garden City over Grady in the District 8-1A opener at the Bearkats’ gym.

The Bearkats (15-5, 1-0) were led in scoring by Walker and John Lopez, who each scored 12 points.

Garden City travels to Klondike on Friday.

Merkel 55, Ballinger girls 48

It took everything Merkel had to escape the Lady Cats in a 6-3A game in Ballinger.

Merkel, which trailed Ballinger 15-11 after the first quarter and 29-22 at halftime, pulled even at 37-37 going into the fourth quarter and then outscored the Lady Cats 18-11 in the fourth quarter.

Addison Martin and Jenna Battle each scored 18 points to pace Ballinger. Martin had a trey and hit 5-of-6 free throws. Battle had three treys and was 7-10 from the line.

Ballinger (16-11, 3-5) travels to Grape Creek on Friday.

Robert Lee girls 67, Blackwell 30

Robert Lee stayed undefeated in 11-1A with a home win over Blackwell.

Kailey Freeman led the Lady Steers with 27 points while Braylee Hood finished with 23. Robert Lee is ranked No. 4 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

Shelby Rasco scored 12 to lead the Lady Hornets while Tori Campos added 10.

Robert Lee (23-2, 4-0) travels to Irion County Friday while Blackwell (1-3) hosts Water Valley.

Christoval boys 58, Eldorado 21

Christoval stayed undefeated in 7-2A boys play with a dominant road win over the Eagles.

Jaron Slaton paced the Cougars with 24 points. Beau Jolly scored 12 for Christoval while Sevastian Salinas added 10.

Christoval (16-4, 2-0) hosts Ozona on Friday.

Mason girls 68, Center Point 17

Mason beat Center Point in a home game in 29-2A.

Sterling Smith led the Cowgirls with 18 points while Avery Brooks had 16. Scout Magnus had 11 points for Mason while Lauren Olson finished with 10.

No. 20 Mason (19-8, 6-1) travels to Junction on Friday.

Harper girls 73, Johnson City 22

Harper beat Johnson City in a 29-2A game.

Rachel Perkins led the Ladyhorns with 24 points. Talli Millican had 13 for Harper while Wolsey finished with 11.

No. 15 Harper (22-4, 6-1) is open Friday.

Coahoma girls 61, Reagan County 45

Coahoma beat Reagan County to stay undefeated in 5-3A.

Katelyn Johnson led the Bulldogettes with 14 points. She had three treys. Shae Lang added 11, including a trey, for Coahoma.

Jenni DelaCruz scored 11 for Reagan County while Glynleah Bishop added 10.

Reagan County (17-10, 3-2) hosts Sonora on Friday while Coahoma (17-9, 5-0) takes on Odessa Compass on the road.

Miles boys 57, Forsan 52

Miles beat Forsan in an 8-2A game.

Carson Ellison scored 20 points to lead the Bulldogs while Shelton Petrey added 16.

Cayden Morgan 19 points for Forsan.

Forsan (1-1 in district) hosts Coleman on Friday while Miles (10-11 overall, 1-1) travels to Winters.

Water Valley boys 61, Sterling City 36

Water Valley took care of Sterling City in a home game in 11-1A.

Nathan Treadaway, Conner Glass and Gabe Smith led a balanced attack for the No. 16 Wildcats. They each had 12 points. Canon Wiese scored 11 while Josiah Padilla added 10 for Water Valley.

Johnny Monreal led Sterling City with 21 points.

Water Valley outscored Sterling City 38-15 in the second half to break open the game.

Water Valley (13-7, 1-1) travels to Blackwell on Friday while Sterling City (11-9, 1-1) hosts Bronte.

Mason boys 56, Center Point 43

Mason beat Center Point in a 29-2A boys game in Mason.

Brody Comey led the Punchers with 14 points. Carson Kelton-Cox (12) and Milam Mayfield (10) also scored in double-figures for Mason.

Mason (7-9, 2-3) travels to Junction on Friday.

Harper boys 47, Johnson City 42

Harper beat Johnson City in a 29-2A game.

The Longhorns were led in scoring by Braden Strickland, who had 25 points. Zane Schubert scored 10 for Harper while Tod Bauman added nine.

Harper (6-19, 3-3) is open Friday.

Lubbock Estacado 108, Lake View boys 38

The Lake View Chiefs had a tough time on the road in District 3-4A action.

Estacado improved to 17-8 overall and 2-0 in district. Lake View dropped to 10-12 and 0-2.

Lake View will host Snyder at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Ben Norton gym.

Lubbock Estacado 60, Lake View girls 17

The Lake View Maidens fell in a District 3-4A road game.

Estacado improved to 9-16 overall and 3-1 in district. Lake View dropped to 4-14 and 1-3.

Mikaila Wagner scored a team-high 14 points for the Maidens, including two 3-pointers.

Lake View hosts Snyder at 6:15 p.m. Friday at Ben Norton gym.

Christoval girls 38, Eldorado 30

Christoval rallied from an early deficit and held on to beat Eldorado in a key 7-2A matchup in Eldorado.

Christoval trailed 12-6 after the first quarter but outscored Eldorado 13-3 in the second to pull ahead 19-15 at halftime. The Lady Cougars also opened the second half by outscoring the Lady Eagles 10-4 to push their lead to 29-19 going into the fourth quarter.

Michaela Eoff led Christoval with 16 points. Madyson George finished with 13 points, which included three treys.

Logan Prater scored 13 to lead Eldorado. She had a trey. Robbi Martinez finished with nine points for the Lady Eagles.

Eldorado (15-8, 1-1) travels to McCamey on Friday.

Christoval (11-12, 4-0) hosts Ozona.

Veribest girls 58, Menard 28

Veribest stayed undefeated in 11-1A with a road win.

Emily Ward (13) and Callie Briley (12) paced the Lady Falcons.

Jaylyn Montes scored 13 to lead Menard (4-3 in district).

Veribest (15-7, 7-0) travels to Paint Rock on Friday.

Merkel 43, Ballinger boys 31

Merkel beat Ballinger in a 6-3A game in Ballinger.

Andrew Delgado scored 11 points to lead the Bearcats.

Ballinger (8-16, 0-6) travels to Grape Creek on Friday.

Jim Ned 74, Brady boys 30

Jim Ned rolled past Brady in a 6-3A game in Brady.

Bryce Davis scored 14 points to lead Brady.

Brady (2-3) plays at Wall on Friday.

Cornerstone girls 25, Heritage 17

The San Angelo Cornerstone Christian girls beat Fredericksburg Heritage in a TAPPS 1A district game on the road. It was Cornerstone's first district game after some postponements.

Mireya Chacon scores six points to lead Cornerstone while Abbie Harrison had five.

Chacon also had six steals while Jessica DeLaughter had six rebounds.

Heritage 55, Cornerstone boys 51

The Cornerstone boys fell to Heritage on the road in a TAPPS 1A district game.

Payton White and Braylon Rios each scored 19 points for the Lions. White also had seven steals, two blocks and an assist while hitting 5-of-7 free throws. Rios had four rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

The Lions (0-1 in district) host San Antonio Atonement on Friday.
