Basketball Roundup- Quincy and Union City fall; UC JV, St. Charles MS all take losses

QUINCY — Cold shooting in the second and fourth quarters doomed the Quincy Lady Orioles Thursday night as they fell to the Reading Lady Rangers by the score of 48-32.

Reading managed to build a small lead early, holding a 16-12 advantage after one.

The Oriole offense went cold in the second quarter, allowing Reading to extend their lead with a 14-6 second quarter advantage, building the lead to 30-18 at the half.

Quincy came back with a strong third quarter, fighting back to bring the score to within 10 points after outscoring Reading 13-11, bringing the score to 41-31 after three.

The cold shooting bug hit Quincy once again as the Orioles ran out of gas and were held to just a single point in the fourth quarter. Reading outscored Quincy 7-1 in the fourth to put away the win, taking the 48-32 victory.

Leading the Orioles effort was Brailee Wood with 12 points; Reagan Horsfall with seven points and five rebounds; Haley Hinds with five points, four assists and three steals; Ella Dunn with three points and four rebounds; and Alyssa McCavit with four points and three rebounds.

Leading the Reading effort was Ashlyn Tesch with a double-double, scoring 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. Jenna Londeau also added double digits with 10 points.

With the win Reading improves to 7-5 overall while Quincy falls to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in the conference. Quincy will next see action Tuesday when they travel to Union City, followed by an away matchup versus Jonesville next Thursday.

Union City girls falls to Springport

UNION CITY — The Union City Lady Chargers fell to the Springport Spartans Thursday night by the score of 63-36.

Springport wasted little time building a solid lead, outscoring Union City 23-10 in the first quarter.

The Spartan defense took over over the next two quarters, only allowing the Chargers four points in each the second and third quarter. Springport outscored Union City 13-4 in the second quarter, building a 36-14 lead at the half.

The third quarter saw Springport extend their lead with a 12-4 advantage, building the lead to 48-18 after three.

Union City refused to quit, battling throughout the game, even outscoring Springport 18-15 in the fourth quarter, but it just wasn’t enough as the Spartans took the 63-36 win.

Leading the Union City effort was senior Megann Russell who scored 10 points, the only Charger in double figures.

Also adding to the Union City effort was Jordan Chard with 10 points; Aaleya Asher with two points; Madison Wilber with four points; Addilyn Rumsey with five points; Makenzie Hale with five points; and Carley Gordon with two points.

Leading the Springport attack was Maddux Oveweg with 22 points and Ryann Locke with 19 points.

With the win Springport improves to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference while Union City falls to 2-9 overall and 0-7 in the Big 8. The Chargers will next see action Tuesday when they host the Quincy Orioles.

Union City JV drops tough battle with Springport

UNION CITY — The Union City JV Lady Chargers dropped a tough Big 8 battle with Springport Thursday night.

Leading the way for Union City was Willow Austin with seven points and eight rebounds and Nevada Gillons with 11 points and four steals. Also adding to the Charger effort was Rylee McDowell, Claire Blue, Addison Meyer and Addison Michael who all played great defense, contributing to nine rebounds and five steals.

St. Charles falls to Bronson St. Mary’s in Middle School basketball

BRONSON — The Cougars of St. Charles Borromeo Middle School faced off with their rivals from just a little bit west down US-12, taking on the Raiders of St. Mary’s Assumption in Bronson.

St. Charles had a rough time with the defensive pressure put on by St. Mary’s, leading to a number of costly turnovers in the early going that forced St. Charles to play from behind most of the game. In the end St. Mary’s would hold on, defeating St. Charles 39-14.

Leading the Cougars effort was Carter Shaffer with eight points; Andrew Richards with four points; and Luke Aerts with two points. Also adding to the St. Charles day was Kenzie Maynard and Makenzie Rinard who played tough full court defense while Aiden Adams and Danny Aburto also pitched in with solid defense in the full court.

St. Charles will next be in action on Feb. 3 when they have their rematch with St. Mary’s at 6:30 p.m. in Bronson
