After a very disappointing performance in a loss to Bryan County on January 11, the basketball Lady Gamecocks of Stephanie Davis came back to crush visiting MCA Saturday night by a 56-19 margin. The win kept the team in first place in the Region 3A race with a 7-1 region record. In the nightcap Arthur Davis’ boys used a 22-2 second quarter to end a three game losing streak with a 55-51 win over the same MCA.

This week the Red and White are scheduled to host Metter on the 21st and go to Portal on the 22nd. ECI will be in the Harold Lee Scott Gymnasium on Tuesday, January 25. The boys were scheduled to host Savannah Classical on the 19th. The girls were 11-3 and the boys 6-7 after the weekend. A pair of dates were cancelled last week because of Covid problems at the other school: a boys-only contest with Savannah Classical and a doubleheader at Johnson County on January 14.

After weekend action, standings at the top of the girls’ race in 3A showed the Lady Gamecocks atop with a 7-1 record, Claxton following at 6-1, and Bryan County following them at 7-2. No one else has a winning record. On the boys side the top part of the standings show Portal is at 5-1, Bryan County 7-2, Jenkins County and SCHS 4-4, and Metter 3-3.

A 70-46 loss to MCA just the week before, the Roosters trailed the same Buccaneers 19-10 after one quarter and appeared on their way to another loss. A 22-2 second quarter led by Ty Lanier’s 13 point explosion put SCHS up 32-21 at intermission and the game never got closer than the final score. That deficit at the end was greatly influenced by an MCA three-pointer at the buzzer. Lanier finished with 26 points with Khalir Nickens having eight rebounds and DeAndre Flowers having five assists.

The opener of the Saturday night doubleheader at the Harold Lee Scott Gymnasium had the Lady Gamecocks overcoming another absolutely horrible shooting night to win going away as eight different players scored. Christian Roberson had a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Asia Roberson had 13 rebounds to go with nine points while Tyler Maynor had nine rebounds and Ta’miyah Maynor had ten points.

For Stephanie Davis the trip to Pembroke to face Bryan County, the only 3A team that had been competitive with the Lady Gamecocks to that point, was a night mare. Held to an amazingly low 23 points, two of the five starters were held scoreless with only Roberson hitting for double figures at 13. The team trailed but 22-19 after three but scored only four points in the final eight minutes to lose 34-23. Combined with a 42-34 win over the Lady Redskins on November 30, the BCHS margin of victory gives them a tie breaker advantage over the Red and White.

The trip to Pembroke on Tuesday for the Gamecocks was worse than that for the Lady Gamecocks. Facing a team they defeated 64-54 on November 30, SCHS fell behind 15-7 after eight minutes and got no closer as they fell 69-28. DeAndre Flowers had eight points and Khalir Nickens had seven rebounds. Flowers also had five assists.
