Basketball tournament canceled after shooting outside Lynn school

An annual basketball tournament in Lynn has been cut short following a shooting Friday night.

Lynn Police said the shooting was reported around 10:40 p.m. outside Thurgood Marshall Middle School, where a basketball tournament was being held.

No one was hit, but a woman sustained minor injuries from glass when the car she was driving was struck by gunfire.

Police arrested 25-year-old Canseco Morillo Saturday morning and charged him with assault with a dangerous weapon. He is expected to be arraigned in Lynn District Court on Monday.

Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson said Saturday the remainder of the Shoe City Classic has been canceled. The popular basketball tournament is now in its 30th year.

“After working to develop a modified schedule to accommodate the City’s public safety concerns, tournament organizers decided a modified scheduled was not workable and will not be moving forward with the remainder of the tournament,” Nicholson said in a statement. “While we are very disappointed that this happened and the consequences, including the loss of a beloved tournament, we must continue to put everyone’s safety first.”

The shooting is being investigated by State Police and the Lynn Police Department.
