BASKETBALL: Verdigris sweeps Miami with pair of double-digit wins

Jan. 26—Morgan Borgstadt simply did everything.

The Tennessee-Martin signee's game was all-encompassing as she led her team in nearly every category, leading Class 4A No. 6 Verdigris to a 64-19 victory Tuesday night over Miami on the road.

Borgstadt, a senior, finished with team-highs of 18 points, seven assists, five steals and four blocks while her five rebounds came in second only to Brynlee Brown, who grabbed six boards alongside seven points.

The Lady Cardinals (14-3) led 3-1 early but soon erupted for a 16-0 run that spanned into the second quarter. They led 38-8 by halftime, and the points kept coming in the second half.

Verdigris scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to increase its lead to 48-8 before the offense finally calmed down a bit. In the end, Kate Wiginton and Maddy Daniels joined Borgstadt in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Wiginton also had a team second-best three steals, and Daniels managed a second-best four assists. Adalyn Waters had a notable performance as well with six points, three rebounds and three assists.

For Miami (2-14), no player scored more than four points. Carly Cook came away with the Lady Wardogs' best stat line, finishing with four points, four rebounds and two steals.

The Lady Cardinals take on No. 12 Oologah on Friday night at the Verdigris Activity Center in a rematch of the season opener, which they won 46-42. The Lady Mustangs, fresh off winning the Pryor Invitational Tournament championship, comes into the game with a 10-game winning streak with an 8-0 mark in 2023.

BOYS — VERDIGRIS 56, MIAMI 46

Reeling from a 27-point loss to Sand Springs in the Port City Classic consolation championship, Verdigris was desperate to make a statement.

So, that is exactly what it did.

Braxton Repschlaeger and Brant Teague combined for 35 points, sparking the Cardinals to a 56-46 victory that wasn't as close as the score indicated. Repschlaeger finished with 23 points while Teague added 12.

Behind 16 points from Repschlaeger and Teague, Verdigris (10-7) led 19-7 after the first quarter, and that 12-point spread remained at halftime at 30-18. Teague scored nine of his points in the first period, all via 3-pointers, and Repschlaeger went into the half with 11 points.

However, it wasn't until the third period the 6-foot-3 forward truly unleashed on the Wardogs.

The sophomore went off for nine points in the third with four field goals and one free throw, helping balloon the Cardinals' lead to 19 points at 48-29 entering the fourth.

Miami (3-13) found some offense in the final eight minutes, though, thanks to 13 points combined from Isaac Booth and Karson Jinks, outscoring Verdigris 17-8 that frame to make for a more-respectable result.

Jinks led Miami with 16 points while Booth and Isaiah Catt added 10 points apiece.

Tyler Willis and Cody Lechlider had notable outings as well for Verdigris, contributing nine and seven points, respectively.

The Cardinals host Oologah on Friday night, hoping to replicate its 67-37 Dec. 13 victory over the Mustangs.
