There was a ‘bat delay’ at KU women’s basketball game at Allen Fieldhouse
The BYU women’s basketball team made its first trip to Allen Fieldhouse as a member of the Big 12 Conference, and it was a game to remember.
It wasn’t because of the result. The Jayhawks rolled to a 67-53 victory on Wednesday as Taiyanna Jackson scored 25 points, grabbed 22 rebounds and blocked five shots.
What made it memorable was a “bat delay” in the second quarter.
It’s not baseball season, so you know this was the flying mammal.
“I just thought it was a bird until it flew in my face. It didn’t hit me, but I’m pretty sure it was close,” guard Ryan Cobbins told the Lawrence Journal-World. “I just closed my eyes and went the other way.”
The Journal-World said the delay lasted six minutes and the bat was not caught.
Here are photos and videos of the bat inside Allen Fieldhouse.
Another bat invaded a basketball arena tonight! This time at Allen Field House between @BYUWBB and @KUWBball. The bat finally flew back up to the upper part of the arena which allowed them to resume play.#BYU #BYUHoops @KSLSports #BatBasketball pic.twitter.com/mKiGrjTw4j

“This is an old building so I wouldn’t have been completely surprised and here we are with an unwelcome visitor,” broadcaster Josh Klingler said.
Wayne Simien responded: “Well, we’ve got an old building, one of the most iconic venues in all of college basketball, currently undergoing some significant renovation projects and maybe woke something up. Part of the demolition might end up being a bat habit somewhere.”
