Bathtub in transport goes airborne on Route 422; motorcyclist injured

Aug. 31—A Pottstown man was injured when a bathtub came off the back of a pickup truck Tuesday afternoon as he was riding a motorcycle eastbound on Route 422 in Amity Township, police said.

Christopher Johnson, 35, was taken by Western Berks Ambulance to Reading Hospital for unspecified injuries after the 4:15 p.m. accident, Amity police said Wednesday.

Information on Johnson's medical condition was unavailable, but police said he was not severely injured.

Police said a plastic bathtub flew off the back of an eastbound truck driven by Matthew Granteed, 36, of Pottstown and into the path of the motorcycle, causing the bike to go down on the road. It wasn't immediately clear if the bathtub had collided with Johnson or his motorcycle.

Johnson wasn't wearing a helmet, police said.

Drivers of commercial and private vehicles are required to properly secure loads before going onto public roads. An investigation continues.

Eastbound traffic was diverted onto Route 345 for about an hour.
