The Batman TV spin-off The Penguin has cast an acting legend as a major character.

The eight-episode series focuses on Colin Farrell's mob boss and other big players in Gotham City's criminal underworld, and Deadline has reported that it has cast none other than Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni.

The actor has an immense CV, having appeared in films like The Shawshank Redemption, Starship Troopers, Promising Young Woman and the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4. His TV work includes The Mandalorian, The Flash, Daredevil and Dexter: New Blood.

But it might be his extensive voice acting work that he's best known for, having lent his distinctive tone to Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Thor: Ragnarok, the DC Animated Universe, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Wolverine and the X-Men, Hulk and the Agents of SMASH, the Crash Bandicoot games, and Detroit: Become Human (which he also motion captured), to name just a few.

Oh, and he's also Mr Krabs in SpongeBob SquarePants.

The character of Sal Maroni is best known in the DC comics universe for being the man who disfigures Harvey Dent's face, which is a factor in him becoming the villain Two-Face. On screen, he appeared in Gotham, Batman Forever and The Dark Knight, with Eric Roberts playing him in the latter.

Previously opening up about his character's spin-off series, Farrell said that he was excited to explore Cobblepot's rise to power.

"The world that Matt Reeves created for The Batman is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot," Farrell said. "I couldn't be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. [It] will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem."

The series has also cast Runaways actor Rhenzy Feliz and How I Met Your Mother actress Cristin Milioti.

The Batman is available to buy now on 4K Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray and DVD.
