Baton Rouge area sees increase in jobs, postings year-over-year

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The Baton Rouge area has seen a job growth increase year-over-year between December 2022 and December 2023.

“Baton Rouge job counts continue to grow year-over-year, and national estimates suggest this growth will continue at the local level,” said Andrew Fitzgerald, BRAC’s senior vice president of business intelligence. “However, the Capital Region’s economy is showing signs of rightsizing.”

The key findings from the monthly economic indicator dashboard from the Baton Rouge Area Chamber (BRAC) found that jobs in the Baton Rouge area were 431,700 in December, which was a 12,000 increase from the year prior, according to a release.

According to the monthly dashboard, Baton Rouge leads fellow metropolitan areas in job growth per year, hotel rates remained the same for the past three years, construction, trade, transportation, and utility industries increased by 500 jobs each in December, job postings seem to be more aligned with historical trends and manufacturing jobs have seen a 25% increase since 2010.

“After years of an extremely hot labor market in which there were often tens of thousands more job postings than unemployed workers, the region is finally seeing its ratio of job postings to unemployed workers return to a level that looks more like pre-COVID conditions,” said Fitzgerald.
