A Battle of the Bulge and D-Day veteran, former Mauldin mayor L.S. Green dies at age 102

Lloyd Samuel Green Sr., longtime mayor of Mauldin, died at the age of 102 on Nov. 21 at Greenville Memorial Hospital, just a few months short of his 103rd birthday in February.

Green, known to many as "L.S.," began as a Mauldin city councilmember in 1984. He served as the only three-term mayor in Mauldin history between 1991 and 2003.

His 12 years in office set the foundation for the city's current structure, including: the repurchasing of former Mauldin Elementary School, groundwork for the Mauldin Cultural Center, the current city hall and Sunset Park.

"He always had a smile for everybody," said Cindy Miller, municipal clerk with the city of Mauldin. "He would always tell us how much he appreciated us and our work. We all liked him very much."

Green leaves behind a legacy.

Born in Central, Green grew up on a farm near the old Donaldson Air Force Base in Greenville and worked there until he was drafted to the Army in 1941. He never finished high school, but he still earned many honors and accolades during his time enlisted.

He served in World War II in the European Theatre with an automatic weapons unit, earning an Army Defense medal, five Bronze Star medals and a Silver Star medal, among a host of other honors.

He served in Germany in the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne and Normandy during the D-Day Invasion, according to his obituary.

Green is the last surviving member of his eight siblings. He leaves behind three living children: Sam Green, Sara Green and Betty Mitchell.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Ella Mae Marchbanks Green and a daughter, Janie Green; grandson, Lloyd Green III; great granddaughter, Anne Catherine Kinerney; and his three brothers and five sisters.

"The thing that always speaks for Daddy is his honesty and his integrity," said Betty Mitchell, Green's oldest child of four. "He would always say, 'a man's word is his bond', and he believed that."

Mitchell said Green still drove himself around.

According to Michell, Green suffered from a tumor that began on his hip and that moved to his spine, which accelerated his death.

The former Mayor owned LS Green Plumbing Parts Store at 102 East Butler Road, and also operated his own, self-titled plumbing service for over 50 years.

According to his obituary, a celebration of life for Green was held Nov. 30 at Mauldin United Methodist Church. He was buried at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
