BATTLE CREEK — The city of Battle Creek is reinstating late fees on utility bills beginning July 3.

City utility bills include water, wastewater/sewer and garbage/recycling services, as well as water and wastewater/sewer “readiness” charges, which fund maintenance and upgrades to city systems.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the city did not charge late fees on utility bills in an effort to help those struggling. Now that COVID-19 is no longer considered an emergency, city officials say they need to bring back the late fees to encourage timely bill payment and help provide funds for system maintenance, helping the city continue to provide the best utility services.

Starting July 3, the city will issue a late fee of 10% of the unpaid bill on all bills that are paid more than 30 days after their due date. The fee is only on the part of the bill that is 30 days past due, and not on a customer’s entire balance.

For example, a $65 utility bill that's more than 30 days past due would garner a late fee of $6.50.

City officials advise there are some options for residents that need help paying utility bills. The city offers payment plans for residents that have had a water leak, specifically for paying the amount from the leak.

Those needing help with monthly utility payments can also call 211 to learn about community resources.
