BATTLE CREEK — A sure sign of spring, Battle Creek's curbside yard waste pickup officially begins next week.

Residents can begin placing yard waste at the curb Monday. The yard waste pickup season runs through Dec. 8.

The city is issuing a few key reminders for residents ahead of the yard waste season:

  • Curbside yard waste service is only for residents inside Battle Creek's city limits

  • Residents are encouraged to place yard waste at the curb on their regular garbage day

  • Residents must use the large paper bags for yard waste (available at most local stores), a cart or container specifically marked for yard waste. Residents can also rent the brown-lid yard waste cart from Republic Services by calling 269-216-8008

  • Residents can place grass clippings, leaves, brush, and sticks inside the bags and carts. For larger branches, please bundle them into four-foot lengths. Each bundle, container, and cart should weigh less than 50 pounds.

The city’s curbside tree debris pickup, after the late-February ice storm, is now complete. Any additional yard waste debris should be prepared for Republic’s curbside pickup, city officials said.

Other options for yard waste include:

  • Mow leaves with a lawn mower and leave them on the lawn as a natural mulch.

  • Compost waste in a corner of the yard.

  • Haul yard waste to the city's residential drop-off compost site, Brice Pit, 715 W. River Road. Current hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The compost site is closed on Sundays and holidays.

  • Hire a private contractor.

The city reminds residents they cannot burn leaves in the city, even with a burn permit.
