BAUGHMAN TWP. − Township trustees seek to hire a part-time road worker this year — a position that has been open since last spring.

A special trustees meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12, in the township office to interview candidates for the road technician vacancy.

"It's not easy to hire someone," said Trustee Mike Geiser, referring to the ongoing labor shortage experienced by many industries across the nation.

The starting wage is in the low $20 per hour range but could change depending on an individual's experience.

What the road technician job entails

Any potential candidate is required to have a commercial driver's license. Previous snow plowing experience is preferred, he said.

In the summer months, a road technician is expected to mow roadside grass and keep the roadways clear.

"Culvert replacement and roadway drainage, including ditch cleaning and berming, are some of the improvement projects we do," Geiser said. "Most of these projects require two workers since there are multiple pieces of equipment involved."

The road worker would maintain various township facilities and equipment as time allows, he said.

Because most projects require two workers, Geiser and Trustee Jeff Kaufman help the sole road maintence worker already on the township payroll with plowing, ditching and culvert replacements, Geiser said.

Some residents volunteer to mow township property, he noted.
