Baxter boys take undefeated hoops record into winter break

Dec. 22—BAXTER — The Bolts had no issues scoring points in their first five games this season.

But in the last four contests, the offense got even better for Baxter's boys basketball team.

The Bolts improved to 9-0 on Tuesday with a 93-35 home win over GMG during Iowa Star Conference South Division play and on Hall of Fame Night.

Baxter averaged 72.6 points per tilt through its first five games but put in an average of 87 points over the past four.

Baxter scored at least 19 points in each quarter against the Wolverines. The Bolts led 27-13 after one quarter and went up 52-22 at halftime. They outscored GMG 22-6 in the third.

Four Baxter players scored in double-figures and Carson Scroggins and Cody Damman led the way with double-doubles.

Scroggins had 19 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks and Damman added 17 points, 10 assists and two rebounds.

Trice Clapper also put in 16 points and grabbed six boards, Treyton Travis finished with 14 points, two rebounds, three assists and six steals and Perrin Sulzle chipped in five points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals off the bench.

Cael Shepley contributed eight points, four rebounds and three assists, Eli Dee scored a career-high seven points and Cainan Travis put in four points. Stadan Vansice scored three points and Jake Travis had three steals.

The Bolts (9-0 overall, 6-0 in the conference) shot 62 percent from the floor despite making only 3-of-12 from 3-point range. They were 18-of-30 from the free-throw line, out-rebounded GMG 34-22 and turned the ball over 11 times.

Jabari Woodbury led GMG with 10 points, four rebounds and four assists and Brayden Duden collected 10 points and six boards.

GMG (3-5, 2-3) shot 31.4 percent from the floor, made 1-of-13 from 3 and connected on 2-of-4 from the line. The Wolverines committed 23 turnovers.

It was Baxter's fourth straight win over GMG and the Bolts have won nine of the past 10 games in the series.

Baxter 84, Ankeny Christian Academy 54

BAXTER — In a matchup of unbeaten teams, Baxter pulled away in the second half for an 84-54 non-conference home win on Monday.

The Bolts led by eight after one but only held a three-point advantage at halftime. They outscored ACA 53-26 in the second half.

Baxter shot 54 percent from the floor, made 6-of-9 from 3 and connected on 10-of-17 from the line. The Bolts committed 10 turnovers and contributed 29 assists on their 34 field goals.

Scroggins led the Bolts with 24 points, five rebounds and three blocks and Clapper collected 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Damman's double-double included 14 points, 11 assists, three rebounds and two steals, Treyton Travis added 13 points, five rebounds, eight assists and six steals and Shepley contributed four points, three rebounds, six assists and three steals.

Sulzle put in four points, grabbed five boards and dished out two assists and Cainan Travis scored four points.

ACA was led by Cade Wierck's 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Eagles (7-1) shot 36 percent from the floor, connected on only 4-of-16 from 3 and buried 12-of-16 from the charity stripe.
