Bay City State Park campground to close for renovations

Bay City State Park in Bay City will close its campground Sept. 5 for renovations, according to a post on the park's Facebook page.

The project will upgrade electrical, sewer and water distribution systems. It includes adding full water and sewer hookup to several sites, new individual electrical pedestals on every campsite with more 50 amp campsites, more ADA sites, a third lane for the sanitation station and a drainage system to help with flooding issues.

The campground is expected to reopen in spring or summer 2024.

Currently, eight other state parks have full-hook up sites with Algonac State Park in St. Clair County also planning to added some in a project that will start this fall or spring 2024.

Bay City State Park's renovations also mean the campground won't be able to hold its Fall Harvest events this year. Instead, the park will host a Trunk-or-Treat in conjunction with its Mother Natural Trail event on Oct. 7 in the day use lot. Participants are asked to decorate their vehicles.

The visitor center will also be closed through June 2023 for reception area and exhibit hall renovations, new roof and siding installation and a science lab addition.

The east half of the day use parking lot will have pavement removed and repaved. Also added to that area will be parking spaces, a bus off turn-around at the playground and spray park area, a duel electric car charging station and sidewalks.

The projects will be paid for by a proposed $4.35 million in federal relief funding from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's Building Michigan Together Plan.
