Bayern Munich are set to wait until Jamal Musiala’s 18th birthday next month before committing the England Under-21 midfielder to a long-term contract.

At his current age, Musiala can only sign a maximum three-year deal under FIFA rules but the Bundesliga champions want the teenager to continue his progression at the Allianz Arena and would prefer longer terms.

Bayern are in pole position to secure the future of Musiala after he broke into their first team in the last six months, although his performances have seen Premier League clubs alerted to him after he left Chelsea’s Academy in 2019.

Musiala made his Bundesliga debut in June before being named in the matchday squads for Champions League knockout-stage games as Bayern were crowned European champions in Lisbon.

This season has seen him score three goals in his 20 first-team appearances for Hansi Flick's side and he has also had Gareth Southgate monitoring his progress for England Under-21s, with Germany prepared to fight for his international future.

With 18 months left on his current deal, big clubs England have been looking at him but being a part of the first-team set up at Bayern has made them well-placed to secure his future.

The Stuttgart-born midfielder played for Germany at Under-16 level while he was at Chelsea but also represented England in youth age groups and his decision on international football will only be finalised when he plays a competitive game at senior level.

“Nothing is written in stone,” said England Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd during the last international break. “We’re doing with what we’d do with any other player. He’s a good player, deserves to be stretched and that’s why he is with us. We’ll do our best to give him an environment to flourish and if he doesn’t join us, there’s nothing we can do about that.”

Valencia’s Yunus Musah, the youngest non-Spanish goalscorer in La Liga, was another England-qualified talent who has impressed abroad but he was called up to the full USA squad last year.
