BBC Radio 1 was taken off air for five minutes today (July 21) after host Greg James failed to meet the Giant DJ Hunt deadline.

This week, 30 Radio 1 DJs went into hiding and Greg was tasked with finding them all so the week’s schedules could be filled again.

Thanks to some clues provided by his colleagues and help from the station's listeners, Greg managed to track down every DJ but one: Mollie King.

Mollie – a former Strictly Come Dancing semi-finalist – had been sailing just off the Isle of Wight, and Greg had to take a boat out to find her. However, health and safety forms stalled him and he missed the DJ Hunt deadline of 12pm.

"We're not going to do it in 20 seconds," Greg said as he realised defeat was on the horizon. "I'm in the middle of the sea."

"Five seconds," fellow DJ Matt Edmondson screamed, as the timer counted down from five to one. The station then cut out as the clock struck 12, leaving listeners in silence for five whole minutes.

Shortly after BBC Radio 1 confirmed it had gone off air via Twitter.

"Just amazing! I couldn’t get out of the car until I heard what was going to happen next," wrote one Twitter user. Whilst another replied: "The fact that Radio 1 went off air for a full 5 minute is sheer commitment."

The broadcaster then tweeted a video of Greg's reaction to missing the deadline as he reunited with Mollie in the middle of the sea.

"I'm really in shock," he began. "I've done a lot of these stupid things and I am in shock and in awe of what [Mollie] has managed to pull off. I'm amazed we've managed to turn the radio station off."

"And you were hiding on a little boat," Greg said to Mollie, who replied: "All along, just metres from you, Greg. Just hiding on a tiny boat."

"Will you ever speak to me again after this?", Mollie then asked, to which Greg quipped: "I don't know. You keep messing with me and there's going to be really bad revenge at some point."
