The BBC has revealed it'll soon be taking viewers back to the world of The Split.

Nicola Walker's hit legal drama came to a dramatic conclusion two years ago with the third and final series.

However, the BBC's now confirmed a spin-off show has been commissioned by the Director of BBC Drama, Lindsay Salt.

Titled The Split Up, the new six-part series will follow a brand new family of legal experts — the Kishans.

The official synopsis states: "Kishan Law is a British-Asian high net worth family law firm in Manchester, noted for its clientele and its reputation. They are the ‘go to firm’ for Manchester’s elite who come to them for their excellence, integrity, and discretion. But the future and legacy of Kishan Law hangs in the balance when a family secret from the past comes to light, throwing their professional and personal lives into turmoil."

The Split Up will be set in the same universe as Abi Morgan's hit BBC One drama The Split, but will instead be written by Ursula Rani Sarma.

Ursula is a playwright and screenwriter who has worked extensively in TV, including on Holby City star Niamh Walsh and True Detective: Night Country star Dervla Kirwan's Alibi drama series Smother.

The writer's CV also includes Dawn French and Emilia Fox's Sky dark comedy series Delicious and Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee's breakout series RAW for RTÉ.

The Split won huge acclaim during its four-year stint on BBC One, including a National Television Award nomination for Returning Drama.

The series revolved around the Defoe family's highly successful law firm, which specialised in divorce cases.

The holdout to the family business was the eldest daughter Hannah (Nicola Walker), who worked for the family's biggest rival. Throughout three series, the Defoes dealt with treachery and tragedy as they tried to ensure their firm's survival.

Abi Morgan produced and wrote The Split, with an impressive cast including Stephen Mangan (Episodes), Fiona Button (Death in Paradise), Annabel Scholey (Doctor Who) and Stephen Tompkinson (The Long Shadow).

Prior to working on The Split, Abi wrote the Oscar-winning film The Iron Lady and the acclaimed BBC drama series The Hour, which starred Ben Whishaw and Dominic West.

The Split Up doesn't have a release window on BBC One and BBC iPlayer yet.
