A first look at new BBC One detective drama The Woman in the Wall has been released.

The new six-part series stars His Dark Materials' Ruth Wilson and Peaky Blinders' Daryl McCormack, and follows a woman named Lorna Brady who wakes to find a corpse in her house, with no memory of who the woman is or if she murdered her.

Brady suffers from sleepwalking, which emerged during her time at the fictional Kilkinure Convent – home to one of Ireland's Magdalene Laundries – where she also gave birth to a daughter called Agnes, who was cruelly taken from her.

She is also pursued by Detective Colman Akande, who is after Brady for a seemingly unrelated crime, though he "finds himself forced to confront his own haunting secrets" when he meets her.

"As Colman searches for a murderer and Lorna searches for her daughter, their paths collide in ways they could never have anticipated," the synopsis adds. "Lorna’s search for Agnes will take her deep into her own past and to the heart of Kilkinure’s darkest secrets, as she and Colman seek the answers they each so desperately need."

The first pictures show Wilson in character as Brady and McCormack as Akande, as their paths cross.

The Woman in the Wall is set to examine the shocking legacy of the inhumane institutions known as The Magdalene Laundries.

The series comes from Calm With Horses' Joe Murtagh, who previously said he was "frustrated" that so few people had heard of the Laundries, and hoped to "shed some light on the awful things that occurred within these kind of institutions and introduce this history to the wider public, so that nothing like it may ever happen again".

Speaking about her role, Wilson said: "Lorna Brady is a complex and fascinating character and I'm thrilled to help bring her to life.

"In The Woman in the Wall, Joe has created both an enthralling gothic thriller and a moving examination of the legacy of The Magdalene Laundries. It's a privilege to bring this story to screens."

The Woman in the Wall is coming soon to BBC One and iPlayer.
