BCCS cruises for a cause

Jun. 15—The Boone County Cancer Society will be cruisin' for a cause this weekend at Memorial Park in Lebanon.

So far this year, BCCS has had a record number of cancer diagnosis, member Kathy Flannery said.

"When we heard that the 4th of July (committee) was not going to be able to have a carnival this year, Joel McWaters, a local Realtor, came to me with the idea that maybe we could have a food truck day," Flannery said.

All of the sales made on Saturday will go directly to BCCS.

In an effort to draw more people to the fundraiser, Flannery thought about having a car show along with it, with some Lebanon racing legends, Mel and Don Kenyon, agreeing to participate.

The food trucks will start at 11 a.m. and go until 7 p.m. The car show starts at 3 p.m., with judging at 5 p.m. and final awards being presented at 6 p.m. Entry is $20 per car.

All food will be $5.

Five members of the BCCS who are actively going through treatment or have beat their cancer will be judging the cars entered in the cruise in.

"It's going to be tremendous," Flannery said.

McWaters said there will be a variety of food trucks serving fan favorites from summertime carnivals and festivals like tenderloins, chicken, corndogs, lemon shakeups, cotton candy, popcorn and, of course, funnel cakes.

This isn't McWater's first fundraiser. During the last few years, he's held other fundraisers including one where he raised $1,500 for the Boys and Girls Club and $1,650 for BCCS. McWaters is getting help from his uncle, Ron Smith, who owns RE Smith Family Concessions, and his mother, who owns Debbie's Concession.

An electric golf cart is also being raffled off for $60 per ticket.
