Beach City creates new police position

KEY ACTION: Passed an ordinance creating the position of assistant chief/deputy chief for the police department.

DISCUSSION: Police Chief Curt Gipe said police officer Mark Myers was promoted to assistant chief/deputy chief so he can make executive decisions during the day. Myers will receive a $1 per hour pay increase. He will receive $17 per hour. Gipe works a full-time job during the day and a police officer was needed to be able to make decisions and if Gipe is off work for any reason.

In another matter, the finance committee met with three residents who have delinquent utility accounts. There are 35 additional residents who are behind on their utility bills. Turn-off notices will be sent to those in arrears. Council heard the second reading of an ordinance to revise the rules and regulations governing electric, water, and sewer account management, billing and collections. Once the ordinance is passed, accounts must be paid in full each month.

OTHER ACTION:

  • Held the first reading of a resolution establishing the rate of pay for the village clerk/financial assistant at $21.98 per hour.

  • Authorized Village Solicitor Stephan Babik to draw up an ordinance to sell village-owned property at 225 Sixth Avenue.

  • Held the first reading of a resolution establishing a village historical district in the downtown.

  • Agreed to draw up a resolution to allow residents to have farm animals inside the village. A request was made by a resident to house a horse on one and one-half acres.

UP NEXT: Meets at 7 p.m. Jan. 3 for an organizational and regular meeting. The meeting was changed from Jan. 2.
