From Sam and Diane, to Ross and Rachel, to Walter White and his blue meth, characters being shipped together because the actors brim with undeniable chemistry is nothing new in the television world.
But as generations shift, more people would rather see TV producers explore different paths when it comes to pairing up characters like … well, maybe don’t.
The latest debate has fans expressing a fantasy about two of the main characters on the Hulu series “The Bear,” with Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) and his restaurant business partner Sydney Adamu (Ayo Edebiri) taking their respect and extremely tight emotional connection to the next level and tossing in some romance.
And yes, there’s even the hashtag with the portmanteau #SydCarmy.

For a ship that is “nonexistent” I find it interesting how Sydney is placed in this trio montage as the contrast. And to highlight her 3 of Swords. In tarot, this is significant for romantic heartbreak. Very interesting indeed ️ #sydcarmy #TheBearFX pic.twitter.com/2oLFrF57Mt— Dalia ️ (@darkkittyart) June 25, 2023
Exactly! I see them as being each others company, peace, refuge.... being able to just sit next to each other in those quiet moments and just know what the other person is thinking. The idea of it on a show like this is so transcendent..love #SYDCARMY https://t.co/0xlJNLkJq6 pic.twitter.com/Wf8CAI6rCZ

And then there’s the the other side of the spectrum, one where fans are arguing that people can be friends without dipping their toe in love town or rather, swan-diving into it head first.
repeating "syd isn't in love with carmy, she's enamored with imagining what those accomplishments and unmitigated respect feel like" over and over until I collapse from dehydration and exhaustion

I could write a 3000 word essay tonight about how this obsession with ships is emblematic of the chronic loneliness most young people feel in their lives. They have no communities and refuse to learn. Instead, they escape reality by creating delusions about fictional characters. https://t.co/oSC4GDkmvZ

Of course this isn’t the only show that’s created the hot button topic online when it comes to a series that wasn’t meant to be built around romance.
Recently, Apple dropped the last season of the popular sports/lighthearted comedy “Ted Lasso,” which revolves around a recently separated Midwestern college football coach who moves out of the country to coach a struggling soccer team in the UK. Fans immediately started shipping the two main characters, Ted (Jason Sudeikis) and his boss, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), while others blatantly said, “Oh, no thank you, please.”
in ted lasso season 4 ted is gonna use another rule of three and it’s just him returning to richmond, going to rebecca’s office and saying ‘barbecue sauce’ before kissing her. k bye. (i’m delulu but i love it)

if ted lasso and rebecca welton were just supposed to be friends all along, why couldn’t he have been her bantr match? pic.twitter.com/PCpoktOYXl

i don’t think it will ever make sense to me that ted lasso made this beautiful love story where two people were so connected the way ted and rebecca were and yet didn’t go there? i can’t explain how refreshing it would have been to see those two imperfect people come together

Been re-watching Ted Lasso season three. Particularly the Amsterdam episode re- watched it a couple times. Ted and Rebecca did not have better chemistry than Rebecca and the Dutchman. It was magical. So perfect they ended up together.

The LGBTQ community often has been shut out when it comes to valid representation on television, and “shipping” has become part of gay culture, according to SDLGBTN. But often, when two queer characters finally find happiness, one character is written off the show in some tragic way (looking at you, Season 4 of “Killing Eve”). Shipping hard has become necessary, whether it becomes a reality or not.
The topic is certainly gaining traction, especially after “Stranger Things” actor Maya Hawke spoke strongly against her character, Robin, who is gay, having a steady girlfriend on the Netflix thriller, to Yahoo Entertainment.
“I don’t know. I feel mixed about it,” Hawke said when asked if she’s happy to see her character find love in the final season. “I feel that it’s both a great thing, but I also love characters where their love life is not the center of their existence. That friendship with Steve is so special. And friendships have been carrying me through my life. I think they’re really important and they deserve their airtime.”
This seemed to set Twitter on fire.
Every time I bring it up, I get a lot of excuses or denials or like "it's the writers fault for not writing believable romances" or "I just don't want it in my ______ shows" but it's definitely a real thing. I can't explain it, but there it is.

The idea that the two sexy co-workers from THE BEAR who spend all their time together might hook up is... not really weird or desperate or pathetic? That's just like... how stories work. And also life, honestly.

I feel like people aged "born after 2000" are so against romance because they see it as a hindering of their freedom and individuality.
Which is bonkers. They seem to ignore the existence of healthy end valuable romantic relationships.— Bootleg Satoru (@OniricWalker) June 24, 2023
I feel like a lot of this is mainly in response to the “shipping” culture that dominated the 2010s with films like Twilight and basically any CW show.
These series would use romantic connections as their main appeal and prioritize story beats around it.— Nerd Chronic (@NerdChronic) June 23, 2023

The shipping debate likely will gain more steam as producers and writers explore their favorite characters. At least all the Jon Snow and his aunt shipping on “Game of Thrones” is good and dead in the past.
