Bears rookie OT Larry Borom will be activated off IR, return to practice

There’s finally some good news for the Chicago Bears during what’s been a difficult time. As the Bears deal with injuries and COVID-19 diagnoses, they’re getting back a key offensive player.

After offensive tackle Jason Peters broke the news that rookie offensive tackle Larry Borom could be returning this week, head coach Matt Nagy confirmed Borom is being activated off injured reserve and returning to practice Wednesday.

Borom suffered a high ankle sprain back in Week 1, and he was placed on IR shortly after. Borom has missed six games as he nursed that ankle injury, and he has 21 days to return to games. But it could happen sooner than that, perhaps as early as Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Especially considering the Bears are in need of a right tackle.

The Bears have been struggling with depth at the tackle position. With starting right tackle Germain Ifedi sidelined at least another week with a knee injury, it was Elijah Wilkinson who stepped in for him back in Week 6. But Wilkinson landed on the reserve/COVID-19 list ahead of last Sunday’s game against the Bucs.

Rolling with Lachavious Simmons at right tackle was a recipe for disaster, and he was replaced by Alex Bars, who’s played multiple positions on the offensive line over the last few years.

While Nagy didn’t offer any updates on second-round rookie offensive tackle Teven Jenkins, Peters said Monday he believed Jenkins would return in a few weeks.
