Bears Wire Podcast: Trubisky is the starting QB, still no extension for A-Rob and Week 1 preview

The Chicago Bears might’ve named Mitchell Trubisky the starting quarterback, but the quarterback competition is far from over. Trubisky edged out Nick Foles to earn the starting job heading into Week 1, but many will be waiting for Trubisky to fail and inevitably be replaced by Foles.

It’s fair to assume that, should Trubisky revert to his 2019 struggles in these early games, that Matt Nagy will bench him in favor of Foles. How short the leash is, we don’t know. So all eyes will be on Trubisky when he takes his first snap, makes his first throw, tosses his first interception and overthrows a receiver for the first time. Things that are going to happen — as they happen to all quarterbacks.

But Trubisky has an opportunity to get off to a solid start with a favorable early-season schedule, which includes games against the Lions, New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons. Will Trubisky start all 16 games this season? The hope is yes — that he’ll finally become Chicago’s franchise quarterback. But history has proven otherwise.

As the Bears prepare for their season opener against the Detroit Lions, host Ryan O’Leary (@RyanOLearySMG) and myself discussed Trubisky being named the starting quarterback, as well as addressed concerns about Allen Robinson’s lack of a contract extension and previewed the match-up against the Lions in the second episode of our brand new Bears Wire podcast.
