Beat the heat: Here are 10 unique Spartanburg spots for ice cream, frozen treats

Do you scream for ice cream, or are you more of a shaved ice fan?

Regardless, as the South Carolina summer heats up, everyone will be looking for a little relief, and sometimes the best way to beat the heat is with a sweet frozen treat.

Spartanburg County is home to a number of ice cream shops, as well as a few unexpected places to get ice cream, frozen yogurt, shaved ices and more. From longtime favorites like Darie Dream to new chains like Andy's, there's sure to be a spot near you.

Check out these 10 Spartanburg County spots for frozen treats:

Hub City Scoops

This downtown Spartanburg (158 E Main St.) staple offers a variety of creative ice cream flavors with fun names like Bang! Iced Latte-Da and Fat Elvis. The shop offers some non-dairy options like Butter Pecan Soy, Chocolate Soy, Espresso Oreo Soy and Vanilla Chocolate Chip Soy, as well as Italian ices and no-sugar-added ice creams.

Hub City Scoops' hand-dipped ice creams, ice cream flights, banana splits, milkshakes and malts are available from 11a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday - Thursday, 11 a.m. -  10 p.m. Friday - Saturday, and 12-8 p.m. Sunday.

Rocky Moo

Just down the street at 100 E. Main St., Rocky Moo offers a customizable ice cream sandwich experience. Customers can choose from any of their fresh baked cookies or brownies and add a scoop of ice cream and some candy toppings to make their dream sandwich. The shop's baked goods and ice cream can also be enjoyed separately.

Check out the day's selections from 5-9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 5-10 p.m. Friday, and 1-10 p.m. Saturday and 1-8 p.m. Sunday.

Spill the Beans

While a coffee shop might not be the first place you'd think of for ice cream, Spill the Beans (174 E Main St.) in downtown Spartanburg has a nice milkshake selection, especially for espresso lovers. The shop offers chocolate and vanilla ice creams and frozen yogurts that can be blended with a variety of toppings to create unique custom flavors on cones or as milkshakes.

Want a shake with a kick? Try their espresso milkshake — any ice cream or frozen yogurt blended with your choice of toppings and smooth espresso.

Stop by the shop anytime of day: 6:30 a.m.- 11 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 1:30-10 p.m. Sunday.

Kerneltime Gourmet Popcorn & Sweets

This Reidville Road sweet shop offers more than popcorn and candy, though they offer plenty of both.

Stop by the shop for an ice cream, served standard in cones or as an ice cream burrito, dipped in cereal and candy toppings and wrapped in one of their many flavors of cotton candy. For those looking for a dairy-free option, the shop also offers a variety of shaved ice flavors.

Kerneltime Gourmet Popcorn & Sweets (5844 Reidville Rd. in Moore) is open 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

Averie’s Ice Cream Shoppe

Averie's Ice Cream Shoppe (9329 Asheville Hwy in Inman) is a venture by Take It Holmes owner Tim Holmes, who wanted to create a family-friendly spot for the growing area. The shop offers over 30 varieties of Hershey's Ice Cream as cones, sundaes, floats and more. They also offer stuffed shakes for anyone looking for a sugar fix: milkshakes topped with cookies, candies, syrups and whipped cream — choose from the menu or make your own.

Looking for something lighter? Check the parking lot to see if the Snowie Icee stand is open.

Averie's Ice Cream Shoppe is open 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday-Saturday, and 1-9 p.m. Sunday.

Scoops on Main

One of the new additions to Woodruff's Main Street, the aptly-named Scoops on Main (222 S. Main St.) is serving up Ashby's Sterling Ice Cream. They promise unique flavors and fresh baked cones.

Get it by the cone, cup or pint 12-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, 12-9 p.m. Wednesday, 12-10 p.m. Friday-Saturday, 3-9 p.m. Sunday.

Ice Cream Barn

Another contender in the monster shake business, Chesnee's Ice Cream Barn (112 W Cherokee St.) has been open for two years serving up scoops, splits and shakes like The Mudslide, a chocolate milkshake topped with a mountain of whipped cream, chocolate syrup, chocolate chips, wafers, and rimmed with chocolate sprinkles.

Ice Cream Barn is open from 1-8 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, 3-8 p.m. Sunday.

Buck ’N Brew Coffee & Ice Cream

Another coffee shop serving up ice cream on the side, Campobello's Buck 'N Brew Coffee & Ice Cream (18981 Asheville Hwy) offers sweet treats like ice cream nachos (ice cream over waffle cone chips), milkshakes and cups and cones, as well as gallons and pints of ice cream to take home. The shop also boasts a full cafe menu with coffees, pastries, sandwiches and more.

Buck 'N Brew Coffee & Ice Cream is open 7 a.m.- 6 p.m. Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday.

Aspen Street Treats

Aspen Street Treats offers their ice cream with a side of summer nostalgia. Their fun funnels menu offers a variety of the festival favorites topped with different ice creams in flavors like Cinnabon, strawberry cheesecake, blueberry swirl, and red velvet.

The dessert truck also offers shaved ices in three sizes and their specialty shaved ice tops the sweet treat with ice cream for the ultimate cool down.

Ohana’s

If you've driven through Duncan toward Greer, you've likely noticed Ohana's (128 W Main St. in Duncan) rows of teal picnic tables and beachy vibes.  The shaved ice shack offers over 30 flavors with five topping options starting at just $3.

Just head down Main Street and turn at the big blue chair.

Ohana's is open 12-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 1-8 p.m. Sunday.
