Beat summer boredom, and the heat, at your library

July is National Anti-Boredom Month and the Abilene Public Library has some great materials to help keep you busy and out of the heat during the weeks ahead.

From puzzles, Book Club in a Box, Maker Kits and more, you are sure to find something new to learn.

Maker Kits allow you to learn a new hobby or skill in the comfort of your home. Each kit focuses on a different type of craft such as loom knitting, soap making, calligraphy, cake decorating, embroidery, cross stitch, stamp making and more.

Located in the basement of the Main Library (202 Cedar St.), each kit checks out for three weeks with no renewals. Once checked out, take the kit home, unpack the tote bag and begin learning your new craft/hobby. For example, the pom-pom making kit includes a binder of helpful information, a book on the topic and pom-pom maker.

We have made it easy for patrons to organize their own private book club with friends and family. Referred to as Book Club in a Box, each box checks out for three weeks and will include seven to eight books in each set, discussion questions, reviews and a list of other books that read like that title in case your group wishes to dive further into that genre.

This collection includes titles such as: “Call Sign Chaos” by James N. Mattis, “One Italian Summer” by Rebecca Serle, “The Dictionary of Lost Words” by Pip Williams, “The Midnight Library” by Matt Haig, just to name a few. So if you want to stay out of the heat and host your own Book Club this summer, this collection is for you!

Jigsaw enthusiasts might enjoy our new collection of puzzles located in the basement of the Main Library. Whether you want to sit in the cool library, and do a puzzle here to pass the time, or if you want to check one out to take home and work on with family or friends, this collection is here for you.

Puzzle themes vary so come by and browse the selection and take home your favorite. Start with a country meadow with just 300 pieces or maybe a world of cats that takes 1,000 pieces to complete.

Visit us at your Abilene Public Library if you would like to borrow these items or browse for more. For information about obtaining a library card and locating the materials please visit us at abilenetx.gov/apl or call your preferred library location.
