Beaufort County School Board approves next year’s calendar. Here are the key dates

The Beaufort County School Board has approved the calendar for the 2023-24 school year, with classes beginning Monday, Aug. 21, and running until Friday, June 3, 2023, according to the approved draft.

Here are the highlights:

The last day of school will be a half-day. The fall semester is 84 days and ends on Dec. 21 while the spring semester is 96 days and begins Jan. 8.

Thanksgiving break will run from Nov. 22-27.

The day before winter break starts, Dec. 21, 2023 will be a half day until the break ends Jan. 8, 2024.

Spring break will be April 13-22.

Schools will be closed for Labor Day, Election Day, MLK Day, President’s Day, Good Friday and Memorial Day. Veterans Day falls on a Saturday, and the Friday before was changed from a day off to an academic day in order to add a day off before winter break.

Board approved 2023-2024 academic calendar without the following changes: Nov. 10 an academic day, Dec. 21 a half day and Dec. 22 a day off.

“I understand we give Veterans Day off during the week because we have parades (and) we have ceremonies at the cemetery, but this year the parade will probably be on (the Saturday) and the ceremonies at the cemetery would probably be on (the Saturday),” Vice Chair Richard Geier said at the meeting.

Geier, a veteran, then asked the two other veterans on the school board — Victor Ney and Earl Campbell — if they were comfortable with the change, and they said they were.

Ingrid Boatright was the only board member who voted against the calendar.

“I don’t think we’re buying that much on the vacation time,” she said. “I think that to me when we give a day off it feels more that we’re acknowledging the holiday as opposed to taking a day off.”

In full, the changes to the proposed calendars are making Nov. 10 an academic day, Dec. 21 a half day and Dec. 22 a day off.

The district has planned three weather makeup days in case of unforeseen weather events like a hurricane. These days are planned for Jan. 3, March 28 and April 8.

Teacher workdays will take place Aug. 14-18; Jan. 4-5, Feb. 16; and June 4-5.

The School Board hasn’t proposed or voted on graduation dates yet.
