Beauty in books: Award-winning author reads to Sturgis children

STURGIS — If you love monarch butterflies, or children’s literature in general, Sturgis District Library recently presented the program for you.

A visit with award-winning children’s author Helen Frost was presented by the library last week at Sturges-Young Center for the Arts. The program was made possible by Sturgis Area Community Foundation’s Patricia A. Franks Council of the Arts Endowment Fund.

An attentive group of children listened as Frost read her book “Monarch and Milkweed.”

Frost said she was happy to know so many children loved butterflies.

“Even when I was as little as you, I loved monarch butterflies,” she told the group.

Frost shared a wealth of knowledge about the species.

And the children had plenty of good questions to ask at the conclusion of the presentation, evidence that they had been paying attention.

Families also were invited to take milkweed seeds home to plant to create a monarch-friendly habitat in their yards. The only catch was, they would have to keep them in their fridge until spring.
