Beaver County goes to the birds... for enjoyment and education

Bird watchers will be busy in Beaver County this February.

The Beaver County Library System is leading a multi-date, multi-site project to help bird appreciation and education soar locally.

"We have such a passionate birding community here in Beaver County ― myself included ― and we want to share that joy with take-n-makes, birding classes, a global citizen science project, and an exciting experience with birdsof prey at Bradys Run," library project manager Courtney Colaizzi said.

Throughout the month, people around the world will devote four days to counting and celebrating birds with The Cornell Lab of Ornithology and The National Audubon Society for their Great Backyard Bird Count, an online citizen science project that helps scientists better understand global bird populations.

"We participated with it in the height of the pandemic and we were asked to bring it back," Colaizzi said.

Each Beaver County library will have free Take-n-Make Bird Feeders to aid with the Great Backyard Bird Count.

In addition, there will be a Feb. 25 Books 'n Birds event starting at 11 a.m. at the Four Seasons Pavilion at Bradys Run Park. The Beaver County Library System will host The Ohio School of Falconry for a free public experience with birds of prey. Register for a gloved encounter on Eventbrite.com.

The Library System also will host free birding seminars with The Beaver County Conservation District and Penn State Master Gardeners.

Colaizzi urges everyone to register as soon as possible as these seats reserve fast.

"If you need a computer, tablet, or event an internet connection to submit your citizen science results, we can help with that," she said.
