Beaver County Humane Society buys former Airgas building for new administrative offices

CENTER TWP. ― As the number of fuzzy friends in need increases in Beaver County, one organization is expanding its footprint to offer more services to the community.

Officials from the Beaver County Humane Society have announced their purchase of the nearby former Airgas Store building, which will be repurposed for the humane society's medical and administrative services. By moving these services across the street from the existing shelter, staff hope to streamline many of the processes at the humane society and offer more public services to the county.

“With our growing needs, the new building will help us to expand our programs and services to better serve our communities,” said Debbie Klesser, board president at BCHS. “We believe purchasing an existing structure will save us substantial time and money in the long run, and we’re all excited about entering the next chapter.”

According to BCHS officials, the existing facility located at 3394 Brodhead Road will still be the central location for sheltering animals, adoptions and most of the organization's medical services. The newly acquired building across the street will primarily be used for administrative roles and educational classes. A fenced-in, cement lot behind the Airgas Store building will also allow the BCHS staff to host drive-thru vaccine clinics and dog play groups at the new location.

“Our current facility was state-of-the-art when it initially opened 10 years ago, but we have definitely outgrown it,” said Alison Yazer, executive director at BCHS. “The fact that the building across the street went on the market while we were figuring out a way to expand our services was too serendipitous to pass up. This acquisition represents myriad possibilities for us as we move into the future of BCHS."

No specific date has been given for the "opening" of the new building, but renovations are expected to be completed by the winter of 2024.

BCHS representatives also said two rentable apartments would soon be available at the new building. Renters will have the options of a two-bedroom and one-bedroom space, with more details to be released at a later date.
