Beaver County libraries kick off summer reading with Free Comic Book Week, more events

As libraries in Beaver County prepare to start their summer reading programs, they are offering residents free comics to prove that reading can be "super."

The Beaver County Library System and New Dimension Comics have teamed up to offer free comic books for library visitors on June 4, allowing community members to get their own copies of major comic book series offered on Free Comic Book Day. Library visitors will be able to pick up titles for all ages throughout the week, with titles featuring everything from Spider-Man to Bloodborne across the 12 different libraries.

Across Beaver County, these libraries will have special issues for the event while supplies last:

  • Baden Memorial Library – “Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra," "Dav Pilkey Sampler featuring Dog Man," "Trese," "Sonic the Hedgehog"

Beaver County's libraries are hosting the giveaways to celebrate their new summer reading program, "Oceans of Possibilities." Throughout the June 4 kick-off, libraries will be hosting a wide variety of events to help encourage summer reading and get people to visit their libraries throughout the summer.

Visitors to the Chippewa Branch Library will be able to find additional fun at the Summer Reading Kick Off Celebration, which will offer visitors crafts, additional giveaways, various outdoor games and free shaved ice from Big Sno. In addition to the activities, Star Wars cosplayers from the 501st Starkiller Garrison will be available for "selfies with the Dark Side." The events are scheduled to begin at noon, rain or shine.

Visitors to the B.F Jones Library will also be able to join the Summer Reading Kickoff Celebration with an "Oceans Of Possibility" magic show featuring Magician Steve and 13th Hour Entertainment. The show and celebration is expected to begin at noon.

Across the river in Ambridge, visitors to the Laughlin Memorial Library will be able to grab free ice cream from Bruster's in Hopewell Township courtesy of borough Manager Mario Leone. Ice cream will begin being served around 1 p.m. Saturday.

For those looking for their next read, the Beaver Area Memorial Library will also be hosting its annual book sale during the kick-off weekend. Starting at 10 a.m. June 4, visitors will be able to begin stuffing bags full of books. Prices on Saturday will be $15 per bag.
