KYM GABLE: So many people are already strapped for cash because of the pandemic, and now they could be days away from yet another blow.

KEN RICE: Just as those final notices are about to start hitting for struggling renters, there is hope and help for some in Beaver County. Royce Jones joins us now with how much money some people just received. Royce?

ROYCE JONES: Good evening. Well, Beaver County has been allocated more than $10 million through the emergency rental assistance program. The funding is specifically designed to help renters cover rent and utility costs.

The Beaver County Community Development Program received the money this week and has outsourced the Franklin Center here in Aliquippa to process the applications, which can be accessed on the state's COMPASS website. Now, combing through this paper application I just picked up, people must be able to produce documentation proving that they sustained loss or reduction of income and are on the verge of homelessness because of the coronavirus pandemic. Leaders here in Beaver county say the need is great.

MARLENE LANDRUM: I think this will go a long way in helping those people to alleviate the arrearages and maybe not have to decide whether they should pay their rent or buy medicine or buy food for their children or something.

ROYCE JONES: Now, those who have been unemployed for more than 90 days or fall below the 30% of the median area income here are being bumped to the top of the list. This program will end once the funds dry out. And it could take an estimated three weeks for people to receive their money once approved. You can access the online application at KDKA.com. Reporting live in Aliquippa, Royce Jones, KDKA News.
