Each year Beavercreek’s local food pantry, “Feed the Creek,” finds sponsors to help provide food baskets for families of Beavercreek students in need, according to the Public Relations Coordinator with Beavercreek City School District.

This year, Feed the Creek was struggling to fill the required baskets because they had trouble getting bulk items from the grocery stores, so their supply dropped, according to Beavercreek School Counselor at Main Elementary, Mary Rice.

Once Rice found out that Feed the Creek was struggling to provide for families in need, she had an idea to see if members within the school district could fill the donations needed.

Rice sent an email out regarding the need for food donations over Thanksgiving break and said it was received “wonderfully.”

“We had more food than we knew what to do with,” Rice said in a statement with News Center 7. “We were able to give every family in need two bags.”

As part of the Beavercreek City Schools’ Character Education initiative for this school year, students, staff and community members made it their mission to collect food for the drive, the Public Relations Coordinator said.

Each building around the district collected items to be donated as well as many local businesses and organizations around the community held food collections for the drive, PR coordinator said.

Staff sorted the collected food and prepared bags for each family on Wednesday, and the food will be picked up from Main Elementary by staff and delivered to the appropriate school buildings for family pickup on Thursday.
