Beckley Common Council meets Tuesday

Oct. 9—Beckley Common Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in council chambers at city hall to consider $38,500 in additional financial support for the New River Transit.

According to council's agenda, the funds are for "membership dues which have not changed in forty years."

Council members will also vote on an ordinance to annex trails through property owned by West Virginia Land Trust (WVLT).

A public hearing regarding the ordinance will take place before council's vote.

The property in question is called the Piney Creek Preserve and is a total of 613 acres. The city is working with the WVLT to add miles of recreational trails to the property formerly used for coal mining.

The public is invited to see what's been done thus far with the Piney Creek Preserve at 2:30 p.m. Thursday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The entrance to the preserve is located at the end of Stanaford Mine Road in Beckley.

In other business, council members will hear a presentation from Salvation Army Captain Liz Blusiewic regarding their work in the Beckley region. Council meetings are open to the public to attend in person or online. To stream the meeting online, go to https://beckley.org/council-meetings-agenda and click on the provided webinar link.
