Terri Daugherty is an active member of Altrusa International of Oak Ridge and the Oak Ridge community. On Wednesday, Jan. 10, she will present her story of facing fear and using activities such as swimming, hiking, and traveling to overcome trauma, manage stress, and improve mental and physical strength. Terri’s philosophy is that anyone can create daily habits that open the door for incredible adventures.

Terri grew up swimming, playing soccer, and running track on school teams. But as an adult, she has discovered that there are more benefits to sports than just staying in shape and hanging out with friends after school.  After enduring several significant traumatic events, she turned back to sports as a healthy outlet, and began traveling to create new experiences, see the world outside of her own perspective, and to strengthen her tenacity.

Terri will share about her time at Berea College, and her travels abroad to Mexico, India, Burkina Faso, Spain and Morocco. She will also discuss graduating from law school, taking and passing two state bar exams, and then one of her greatest adventures yet - hiking the Appalachian Trail. The day after she received her passing bar results, she drove to Maine and began her southbound hike of the 2,187.6 mile trail. Along the trail, she encountered all sorts of hurdles - from protective mother bears, difficult terrain, fording rivers, extreme weather conditions, poorly marked trails and getting lost. She will share the lessons she learned from facing her fears and living on her own in the woods for months, and how those skills translate to bravery in all kinds of life circumstances.

Terri will also speak about her experiences as an open water long distance swimmer.  She most recently swam the Tennessee River Triple Crown, which consists of three open water races, which are five-, six- and 10-miles long.  She also did a 6.7-mile swim of Lake Roosevelt in Arizona. She will discuss how she prepares for these races, and how others can use daily activity and habits to tackle their next adventure.
