Bed, Bath & Beyond declares bankruptcy. Will Charlotte area stores still take coupons?

Another end of an era has arrived in the retail game.

Bed, Bath & Beyond has filed for bankruptcy and plans to shut down its stores nationwide.

The chain — launched in 1971 in New Jersey — became known for its wide selection of homewares, toiletries and more. And their 20% discount coupons were a staple of mailboxes for years.

For store fans, you’ll still have a chance to shop for going-out-of-business sales before the Charlotte area stores close for good. But you’ll need to act fast if you want to use up coupons, merchandise credits, and gift cards.

Here’s what to know about Bed, Bath & Beyond’s bankruptcy and shutdown:

Bed, Bath & Beyond bankruptcy

Bed, Bath & Beyond filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in New Jersey on Sunday, according to the store’s bankruptcy filing.

But the brand has been facing financial difficulties for years.

In 2019, NPR reported, multiple longtime executives and board members were forced out, and new leadership shut down 200 stores. Another leadership change followed earlier this year. It then defaulted on some loans and closed more stores.

When will Bed, Bath & Beyond stores close?

Bed, Bath & Beyond stores are still open as of Monday, but the chain said in its bankruptcy filing it expects all 360 remaining locations to close by June 30. The remaining locations of its children’s focused spin-off store, BuyBuy Baby, will likely close along the same timeline.

“Store closing sales” will start Wednesday, Bed, Bath & Beyond said in a Q&A on its shut down.

“We encourage you to come shop for your favorite products while merchandise selection is best,” the brand said.

Orders can still be placed on the store’s website and app, and the chain expects “all in-stock orders will be fulfilled.”

Bed, Bath & Beyond will “accept returns and exchanges for items purchased before April 26, 2023, in accordance with our usual policies until May 24, 2023,” but “all purchases during our store closing sales will be final.”

When will Bed, Bath & Beyond stop accepting coupons? What about credits, gift cards?

Bed, Bath & Beyond will stop accepting coupons Wednesday, according to the store’s closing Q&A.

Shoppers will have until May 8 to use any gift cards and May 15 to redeem merchandise credits. The chain is “no longer awarding Welcome Rewards on purchases,” it said, but customers can “redeem Welcome Rewards until May 15.”

Welcome Rewards+ store credit cards can still be used to make purchases.
