New Bedford Eats: Burgers, nine spots to hit up for National Burger Day
National Burger Day is coming in hot with some phenomenal burgers here on the SouthCoast. The holiday on May 28 is all about the go-to staple of almost any restaurant.
A burger is always the answer when you don’t know what to order, don’t want to try something new, or have a picky eater. It is the perfect combination of all the food groups put together in one incredible handheld package.
Not surprisingly, all across the New Bedford area there are restaurants dishing up this classic with their own twists. Here are some places to check out this weekend as you celebrate National Burger Day.
Double Pickle Back Burger
Fried pickles and a burger?! Sixes & Sevens has two fan favorites combined for a tasty treat. You get two seasoned smashy patties topped with melted Swiss, fried pickle chips, house slaw, and a scratch-made apple whiskey glaze on a soft pillowy potato roll. While they have a bunch of other smash burgers on the menu another that caught our eye was the Hulk Smash, which has two beef smashy patties with house guac, melted cheddar, avocado poblano ranch, and c-angered jalapeños on a soft potato roll. Mushroom and Swiss Burger
This mushroom and Swiss burger at Cork Wine and Tapas is sure to hit the spot for any burger lover. You get an 8 oz. patty, sauteed button mushrooms, Swiss cheese, mixed green, and roasted garlic aioli all done to perfection. The other burger on their menu is the Tommy Oliver Burger, an 8 oz. patty, jalapeno cream cheese, pepper jack, crispy bacon, sliced avocado, red onion, and mixed greens on a grilled brioche bun. Either of these is worth the drive to 90 Front St., New Bedford.
The Buttonwood Burger
At Back Door Burgers & More they pay homage to New Bedford with burgers named after the local areas like The Buttonwood, the Z, the Brooklawn, The Amaral, or the Union Street. Try the Buttonwood which is an all-beef patty topped with cheddar cheese, bacon, beer-battered onion rings, and bbq sauce; or the Amaral which is an all-beef patty, cheddar cheese, Amaral’s linguica patty, and a fried egg. They also have a burger of the month to keep an eye out for at 36 Homer's Wharf, New Bedford.

Southern Belle
Any burger list wouldn’t be complete without DNB Craft Kitchen, since burgers are kind of their thing. There are 8 different burgers on the menu, plus the option to build your own. You can’t go wrong with the Southern Belle, a beef patty, micro greens, American, jalapeno sweet corn aioli, chives, tomato jam, and house bacon on a grilled potato bun; or the New Guy, a beef patty, greens, gruyere, french onion mustard, egg yolk jam, mushroom relish. Cabin Burger
You don’t stay in business for over 75 years if you don’t have some good grub. The Cabin Restaurant, at 114 East Grove St., Middleboro is proof of that. Check out their classic Cabin Burger a charbroiled 1/2 pound burger with lettuce, tomato, and choice of cheese served on a toasted bulkie roll make sure to add applewood smoked bacon. If you are looking for a different spin on a burger check out the Greek Burger, a charbroiled 1/2 pound burger with feta cheese, spinach, and tomato on a garlic butter grilled bun.
New Bedford Eats: Farmer's Market; CHiPPi, Southern BBQ
California Burger
Don’t want to leave your pup at home? At the Walrus & Captain you can enjoy your burger outside and bring your furry friend along. With any of the burgers, you can get a beef, chicken, or a black bean patty. Taste test the California Burger with avocado, mesclun, cheddar, and Baja ranch; or the Great Hill Burger with bacon, caramelized onion, and blue cheese. Southwest Veggie Burger
For those who want a good burger but are vegetarian make sure to check out the Southwest Veggie Burger at Fireside Classic American Grille. This burger is a house made veggie burger with quinoa, sauteed vegetables. sweet potato topped with cheddar, romaine, tomato, onion, avocado, and chipotle crema. For the meat lovers at the table, they also have an 8 oz USDA Prime burger topped with arugula, tomato, onion, and American cheese. Everyone will leave happy when they dine at 30 Bedford St., Middleboro.
C&P Burger
When you want to indulge in a burger get the C&P Burger at Cask & Pig Kitchen and Alehouse . This showstopper is a hand-ground burger patty topped with American cheese, crumbled chouriço, pimenta moida aioli, and of course the runny fried egg. The Fancy Burger is also on the menu with bacon jam, smoked gouda, fried pickles, red onion, greens, and smoked mustard aioli. Good Eats begins at 780 State Road, North Dartmouth.

Island Island Burger
You won’t go home hungry when you order a burger at the Quahog Republic Whaler's Tavern. This masterpiece is a certified Angus patty topped with applewood bacon, caramelized onions, BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese, grilled pineapple, and a skewered shrimp with lettuce and tomato, on a butter-toasted bulky roll.
