New Bedford Eats: July 4 weekend has some good choices in the NB food scene

NEW BEDFORD -- Even though July 4 lands on a Tuesday, this weekend the celebration starts all over the Whaling City. While enjoying the holiday weekend, now is the time to enjoy some of the fun in the New Bedford food scene.

The SouthCoast has a vast array of restaurants and varied cuisines to choose from, making it hard to decide on one thing that will please everyone in your party. This week's edition of New Bedford Eats provides the perfect solution with a selection of options: a kid-friendly chippi, a Greek taste experience, and a family-owned ice cream spot – all sure to tantalize anyone taste buds.

Finally, kids can enjoy Mirasol's Chippi

Announced on Monday, Mirasol's Cafe will now offer a decaffeinated Chippi for people who love the flavor but not the kick. According to the cafe's official Facebook, "Now you don’t have to worry when your kiddos sneaks a sip... also for you folks who want an evening CHiPPi without the caffeine rush!"

The CHiPPi Jr. will be sold at both locations in Dartmouth and New Bedford.

For coffee lovers, Marylou's has a challenge for you

Planning on hitting the open road this summer? Marylou's is offering a sweet incentive for all road warriors seeking a caffeine fix to stop in on your travels. It's recently launched "Summer Road Trip Challenge," invites people to visit all 42 Marylou's locations between June 15 and Aug. 30 - and take a selfie photo or video with your bright pink cup documenting each visit - and be entered in a drawing for the chance to win a $500 Marylou's gift card.

A Taste of Greece in Dartmouth

The St. George Greek Festival is coming to Dartmouth on Saturday, July 8, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Listen to music as you fill up on a tasty selection of Greek food favorites - from gyros to souvlaki, spanakopita, moussaka, pastichiou, baklava, almond rolls, koulouraki and more.

The event is slated for St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 186 Cross Road.

Get ice cream from this family of seven

Located at 12 Ferry Street in Fairhaven, the Ice Cream Cottage is officially open in the former Brady’s Ice Box between the former Margaret’s and Elisabeth’s. The Martins and their seven children, aged 20, 18, 16, 15, 11, 9 and 6, will all be working together inside the shop.

The menu includes ice cream from Acushnet Creamery, soft serve ice cream, Hawaiian shave ice made from fresh fruit puree, homemade waffle cones, cookies and brownies.

The Ice Cream Cottage will also make their own hot fudge, whipped cream, and coffee drinks.  There will be a few food items such as hot dogs and quahogs and homemade chowder.

Owner Colleen Martin is the daughter of Maggie and John Sweeney opened up a homemade ice cream shop in the village of Osterville on Cape Cod in 1986.

51st Cape Verdean Recognition Parade

On July 1st, 2023, the 51st Annual Cape Verdean Recognition Parade will occur at 11 a.m., setting off from Rockdale Avenue and Union Street at Buttonwood Park.

The path of the greater part of the parade will take Union Street left onto Acushnet Avenue, then Grinnell Street with the eventual right onto Purchase Street. The procession will bring it to a close at the reviewing stand at the Cape Verdean American Veteran’s Memorial Hall at 561 Purchase St.

A little Taste Of Heaven will be serving Cachupa/Manchupa Kale Soup Pastels Linguica and Jag Tuna and Jag Summer Jag. Drinks include Sumol Pineapple, Orange, Passion Fruit and Water.

Stop by Cedar St Creations at 444 Purchase Street, to get a fresh cup of lemonade from the John Squad. There will be a selection of Air Plants and lots of other creations and hand made jewelry. Thirty percent of the lemonade sales will be donated to the Cape Verdean Association.

Breakfast Club for Older South Coast LGBTQ+

The SouthCoast LGBTQ+ Network is hosting a Breakfast Club for Older South Coast LGBTQ+ Individuals on July 2, 2023, at 10 a.m., at Mikey B’s Restaurant at 989 Victoria St. in New Bedford. Guests can register online.

Summer Kick-off with Latinas in the SouthCoast

Latinas in the South Coast and Santiago Professional Services have joined forces to host a family-friendly kick-off event for the summer at Santiago Professional Services on 1913 Purchase St. in New Bedford.

Fun activities include bouncy houses, vendors, yoga sessions (2-3pm), music, games, and more! Don't miss out on a great day of enjoyment and connecting with the local community.

The Latinas in the SouthCoast mission is to gather a powerful community of women with the purpose of providing support, networking, engagement, inspiration, economic power and recognition for Hispanic female professionals and entrepreneurs.
