New Bedford preliminary election Voter's Guide, what you need to know

NEW BEDFORD - The city's preliminary election will be held Oct. 3 for mayor, at-large city councilor, and Ward 5 city councilor.

The top two mayoral and Ward 5 finishers, along with the top 10 at-large council candidates will compete in the municipal election on Nov. 7.

The six current candidates for mayor include incumbent Jon Mitchell, and challengers Nathan J. Almeida, Ryan Duarte, Michael Janson, Xavier R. Cardona, Richard Tyson Moultrie.

The four current candidates vying for the Ward 5 seat left open with Councilor Scott Lima's decision to run for at-large city councilor are Joseph P. Lopes, Zachery R. Boyer, Carlos M. Maiato, Ian Marcus Saunders. The preliminary vote will be within Ward 5 for the Ward 5 council seat.

The 12 current candidates for at-large city councilor include Scott John Lima, (former Ward 5 councilor); Shane A. Burgo, (incumbent); Guelmie Santiago; Arya Pixlie Witner; Ian Abreu, (incumbent); Naomi R.A. Carney, (incumbent); Linda M. Morad, (incumbent); Bruce Wayne Duarte Jr.; Devin B. Byrnes; Joyce Rowley; Carmen F. Amaral; Brian K. Gomes, (incumbent).

The race for Ward 1's council seat features two candidates - incumbent William "Brad" Markey, and Leo Choquette - and will be decided in the municipal election on Nov. 7.

Uncontested incumbents

Rounding out the field in the municipal election will be the uncontested incumbent councilors running in Wards 2, 3, 4, and 6, the three uncontested incumbents for School Committee and the one uncontested candidate for Assessor.

The uncontested incumbent councilors are Ward 2, Maria E. Giesta; Ward 3, Shawn Oliver; Ward 4, Derek Baptiste; Ward 6, Ryan Joseph Pereira.

The three uncontested incumbents for School Committee are Bruce J. Oliveira; Joaquim B. Livramento Jr.; Christopher Allen Cotter.

Incumbent Martin "Marty" Treadup is the uncontested assessor candidate.

  • Sept. 22, until 5 p.m. Last day to register to vote for the preliminary election.

  • Sept. 23, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In-person early voting at main Public Library.

  • Sept. 26, until 5 p.m. Last day to apply for a mail-in or absentee preliminary ballot.

  • Sept. 27, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In-person early voting at Taber Mills.

  • Sept. 28, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. In-person early voting at Hazelwood Senior Center.

  • Oct. 2, until noon. Last day to apply for in-person absentee preliminary ballot.

  • Oct. 3, preliminary election. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
