Norfolk SPCA in partnership with Doumar’s Cones & Barbecue are hosting a donation drive. They are collecting items such as kitten milk replacement, Nylabones and food for puppies, dogs and kittens (Hill’s Science Diet). Bring donations valued at $50 to Doumar’s and receive a custom dog bandana. Meet some adoptable pets while you’re there.

Restaurant Week

Take a break from cooking and dine out for Chesapeake Restaurant Week. Participating restaurants are offering deals on breakfast, lunch and dinner from $10 to $55. For example, Almighty Meals will have a Quintessential Quesadilla (omelet wrapped in Colby cheddar cheese, inside a traditional or low-carb tortilla, stuffed with Colby cheddar and sausage or
bacon and topped with crispy cheese) for $20. Black Pelican Seafood Co. will have a $35 dinner with a choice of a soup or salad and entrée, and a dessert of the day. Jalapenos Mexican Restaurant will have $15 lunch and $20 dinner specials.

New Realm Brewing Co. is having a Spooky Beer Dinner — don’t be scared. Sous Chef Stephen Hevey will prepare a three-course meal paired with three, 5-ounce beers. For example, he’s kicking off the evening with a pomegranate, cranberry, orange zest and brie bruschetta partnered with a Pour Some Hazy On Me.

Connecting roots through food

Jamestown Settlement Director’s Series presents a discussion with Michael W. Twitty, an African American and Jewish culinary historian and food writer. He’s also the author of the award-winning books “The Cooking Gene: A Journey Through African American Culinary History in the Old South,” “Rice: A Savor the South Cookbook” and “Koshersoul: The Faith and Food Journey of an African American Jew.” Tickets must be purchased in advance.

The Poquoson Seafood Festival pays tribute to the watermen of the Chesapeake Bay and life along the coastal city.
