Beer Pick: Alternator, Back Shed Brewing, Waite Park

Back Shed Brewing has a traditional dark German beer on tap called Alternator. This beer is a German Alt style of beer. The style was developed in the late 1800s to compete with the new cold fermented lagers at the time. Alt beers use ale yeast but ferment at colder lager temps to condition and give the beer a clean and rich flavor.

Alternator has a dark copper color with an off-white, creamy, long-lasting head. It has a malty aroma reminiscent of toasted bread crust with a light nutty character. There is also a light floral hop spiciness in the background. This beer is malt forward with rich dark malts and a pleasant nutty character. There is a hop bitterness that is not aggressive and compliments the malt. Hints of a dark fruitiness from the ale yeast round-out the flavor. This is a very well-made example of the style, clean and full of that traditional German character. Keep these tasty beers coming Back Shed! Bravo!
