Beer pick: Sand in my Boots, Back Shed Brewing, Waite Park

Sand in my Boots is a fruited, German, Gose style of beer. Gose, pronounced “go-suh,” style of beers have a slight sourness to them. That light sourness can actually be very refreshing when brewed right.

The style originated in Goslar Germany over 1,000 years ago when many beers were spontaneously fermented and brewed with 50% wheat. Many brewers today add a fruity twist to the beer to round-out the flavor.

Sand in my Boots is a delicious example of Gose beer. It has a hazy deep-golden color with a creamy white head. The aroma is fruity with a big citrus kiss. The flavor has a light barley and wheat malt base that supports the dominate fruitiness that consists of tangerine and pineapple with hints of coconut. The sweet fruity flavors are balanced by a refreshing tartness.

This is a great beer for summertime sipping at the beach.
