What’s being built at Madonna Plaza? Construction starts on new tenant at SLO shopping center

Construction has started on the newest tenant in the Madonna Plaza shopping center in San Luis Obispo: Tilly’s.

The teen clothing store is set to take over a brand-new 6,500-square-foot space next to the Michael’s craft store, though the timeline of when the shop might open is unclear.

Mark S. Ungarfrom, executive vice president of leasing and development at Schottenstein Property Group — which operates the shopping center — said construction will likely be completed in December, but when the store would be open is up to Tilly’s.

The Tribune previously reported the clothing retailer would go into a new building previously occupied by Sears before it closed in 2017.

A site map available on the Schottenstein Property Group website on Monday also listed Tilly’s as the tenant for the new building..

According to its website, Tilly’s is “a leading specialty retailer of casual apparel, footwear and accessories for young men, young women, boys and girls.”

The company is headquartered in Irvine, and operates 250 stores across 33 states, according to the website.

Meanwhile, there are currently six other vacant storefronts at Madonna Plaza, according to site plan documents on the Schottenstein Property Group website.

Those include Aerie clothing store, which closed in January, as well as the Hallmark shop that closed in 2019.
