Ukraine’s Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk fell just short of securing her first world championship in long jump, but still snagged the silver to win Ukraine’s first medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary on Aug. 25.

It was oh-so-close for Romanchuk, who jumped 15.00 meters on her first attempt and was leading until the very end, when Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas clipped her with a vault of 15.08 meters for gold.

It was the second silver medal in the event for Bekh-Romanchuk, who also finished second at the 2019 world championships in Doha, Qatar.

Cuba’s Leyanis Perez Hernandez won bronze in Hungary with a jump of 14.96 meters.

Bekh-Romanchuk is one of the most popular athletes in Ukraine, both for her success in sport and out of it. The 2022 European champion in triple jump is sought-after by advertisers and starred in a music video by one of Ukraine’s most popular musical acts – Antytyla’s ‘And You Start’.

Bekh-Romanchuk is married to two-time Olympic medalist swimmer Mykhailo Romanchuk, who was outraged after Russia destroyed the poolin Dnipro he used to train for Tokyo 2020.
