Belarus introduces death penalty for treason

The amended criminal code envisages capital punishment for state officials, civil servants, and military service members found guilty of high treason.

Other new provisions include criminal charges for “terrorism propaganda,” and “discrediting” Belarusian Armed Forces.

Belarus is the only country in Europe that still practices capital punishment. Human rights activist maintains that death penalty can be used by the state as a tool of oppression and to suppress political opposition.
