Lieutenant Colonel Anton Charamnykh, deputy commander of the 310th Artillery Group for Ideological Work of the 120th Separate Guards Mechanized Brigade, is set to face trial for "treason" in Minsk on Feb. 15, the Viasna Human Rights Centre reported on Telegram.

He did not support the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine. Having spent a year behind bars, Charamnykh could potentially receive a 20-year prison sentence.

He is accused of "betraying the state by a person enjoying the status of a serviceman" and "inciting other social enmity". Under these articles, he faces imprisonment for a term ranging from 10 to 20 years.

Cheramnykh’s comrades revealed that he did not hide his position on the war, Belarusian outlet Zerkalo reported on March 16.

He stated that he did not want to convey pro-Russian propaganda to soldiers because he knew it was untrue.

"Anton took the war in Ukraine very close to his heart, especially since he had been in Kyiv," said his fellow servicemen.

After the protests in Belarus in 2020, he planned to leave the army, waiting for his contract to end.
