Belgian zoo welcomes new-born tapir

"The baby is doing great. It's very lively and playful. It hops very happily and it breastfeeds from its mother without problem," aid caretaker Lynn Van Steenvoort last Friday (December 17).

She added the calf was its mother Nakal's first son and fourth child.

Van Steenvoort and her colleagues picked two names for the baby: Wayan and Willy and it will be for the public to pick their favorite on social media website Instagram.

A native of the rainforests of Southeast Asia, the Malayan tapir, also known as Malay tapir or Asian Tapir, is considered an endangered species according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
