Belgians holiday in tents on trees as staycations rise

Would you holiday in a tree?

These tear drop-shaped tents

are soaring in popularity

Location: Borgloon, Belgium

as more people embrace staycations

(SOUNDBITE) (Dutch) VISITOR, DRIES MOONS, SAYING:

"I like the way it's made, it looks different from other things, different than just a tent or a campsite. Also, numbers are limited because there are only four of these 'drops' hanging. I'm happy that it's so small and picturesque."

They were designed in the 1990s

for activists protesting tree felling

but have evolved into a tourism draw

They sleep two and cost $79 a night

in a handful of European and U.S. locations

(SOUNDBITE) (English) ARTIST AND INVENTOR OF TEARS-SHAPED TENTS, DRE WAPENAAR, SAYING:

"It is hanging free in the air, it's relating to your childhood dreams, building a hut in your tree. It's related with privacy and public domains, it's in between that. So, you are like a parasite, hanging anywhere you want."
