Bella Ramsey Announces Their Next 'Monstrous' Role

The Last of Us may still be going strong, but Bella Ramsey has their next role all lined up.

The actor has been cast in an upcoming period drama called Monstrous Beauty, from Amulet writer/director Romola Garai. They will play a young woman named Barbara Field who is born into poverty and coping with a rare condition leaving her covered in hair.

“Given the precious gift of an education, she is offered the opportunity of a place in the luxurious and decadent court of King Charles II, as a ‘Natural Wonder’ where people with extraordinary appearances mix with the aristocracy,” per the official description.

The Crown’s Dominic West has been tapped to play King Charles II, with Ruth Negga (Preacher) and Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve) also having signed on.

Monstrous Beauty will ultimately follow Barbara on her quest to become a playwright, with the help of an actress, Nell Gwynn (Negga), who is also the king’s mistress, and “intent on teaching Charles a public lesson on the true appreciation of women beyond their physical appearance.”

“Barbara seeks the help of famous playwright of the day, Aphra Behn (Shaw), and casts beautiful actor Vale (the object of Barbara’s own desire) as the lead, despite his lack of talent,” the description continues. “But will Barbara succeed in becoming a woman of independent means whilst challenging a highly patriarchal society, and become master of her own destiny?”

It isn’t immediately clear when the movie will begin filming, but production on season two of The Last of Us isn’t expected to begin until the end of the year at the earliest, with early 2024 seeming more likely, leaving space in Ramsey’s schedule to take on what looks to be a fascinating new role for them.
