Bella Ramsey Opens Up About Their Gender Identity on Transgender Day of Visibility

Transgender Day of Visibility, a time to celebrate trans joy and bring awareness to the discrimination trans people face worldwide, falls annually on March 31. This year, The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey honored the occasion with a sweet childhood photo and a heartfelt message about gender identity to fans and followers.
“Happy TDOV to this little dude! I didn’t know the word non-binary in this picture,” the actor wrote. “But I knew what it meant. Inherently. Because I always was, and always will be. Lotsa love to all of my trans, enby and gender funky friends. #TransDayOfVisibility 🤍”

Melanie Lynskey, Yellowjackets star and Bella’s co-star in episode four of HBO’s The Last of Us, replied, “You are so awesome 💗💗💗.”
In January, Bella opened up about their gender identity and shared that they use all pronouns. “I guess my gender has always been very fluid,” they said in an interview with The New York Times. “Someone would call me ‘she’ or ‘her’ and I wouldn’t think about it, but I knew that if someone called me ‘he’ it was a bit exciting.”
The actor added that when filling out forms, they’ll check “non-binary” when available. “I’m very much just a person,” Bella said. “Being gendered isn’t something that I particularly like, but in terms of pronouns, I really couldn’t care less.”
A few weeks later, in February, Bella clarified that although they don’t mind what pronouns are used for them, they don’t like to be called a “powerful young woman.”
“This is what bothers me more than pronouns: being called a ‘young woman’ or a ‘powerful young woman’, ‘young lady,’ but I'm just not [that],” Bella told GQ. “Catherine Called Birdy, I was in dresses. Young Elizabeth, I was in a corset. And I felt super powerful in that. Playing these more feminine characters is a chance to be something so opposite to myself, and it’s really fun.”
